Nestled in the heart of the West Virginia Appalachians, Harlan's Creek is a community that stays with you long after your visit — sometimes literally.

Whether you've come for the hiking, the history, the food, or simply found yourself here unexpectedly, we're glad you made it. Harlan's Creek has been welcoming visitors since 1847, and our community has developed a deep familiarity with the process.

Our covered bridge, established as a town landmark in 1889, remains one of the finest examples of Burr arch truss construction in the tri-county area. The Moonlight Diner has served the community continuously since 1962. Hillside Hardware carries most of what you'll need. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home has been here since the beginning.

Our History Harlan's Creek, established 1847

Harlan's Creek was established in 1847 by settlers moving west through the Appalachian passes. The town grew steadily through the late 19th century, sustained by timber, coal, and the agricultural potential of the Caldwell Creek valley.

The covered bridge, constructed in 1889, served as both a practical crossing and a symbol of the community's permanence. The First Baptist Church followed in 1851. The Historical Society was founded in 1912.

The early 20th century brought modest growth. The Moonlight Diner opened in 1962 and quickly became a community institution. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, founded in 1887, has served the community continuously and without interruption for over a century.

The period from 1987 to 1991 saw several significant infrastructure improvements, including road resurfacing on Millbrook Road and upgrades to the town water system. The Historical Society's exhibit covering this period is currently under restoration and not available for public viewing.

Harlan's Creek today is a community of approximately 4,200 residents (approx.). It is, by most measures, a normal town.
